At its general assembly on November 2, AÉÉTS members voted to adopt a strike mandate for the week of November 9 to 13.

Quick navigation

What does this means ?

Student volunteers will ensure that course-related activities (labs, practical work, classes) do not take place. All other activities will not be affected (clubs, sports centre, library, research, etc.).

Why ?

The government has announced a 10% cut to education spending over three years. This cut affects our community through reduced services: fewer lab assistants, fewer updates to course content, and less funding for clubs and for student support services (Services à la vie étudiante, SVE).

The financial assistance model for students (loans and bursaries) has not been revised since 1997. As a result, the financial aid available to students is completely inadequate given the rising cost of living.

Strike week, but full of activities

During the week, AÉÉTS will organize activities. Details will be shared soon.

If you would like to take part in or help organize these activities, please fill out this form: Envie de t’impliquer à ton association étudiante? Dis-nous-le!. For any other questions, you can write to greve@aeets.com.

Exams

If you have an exam during the strike, please let us know at greve@aeets.com. It will be handled as a priority. If your online course is held despite the strike mandate, please let us know using the following form: Signalement de cours en ligne

You are welcome to share this message with your professors.

For faculty members

The process will be similar to last year. You are expected to come in and attempt to teach your class. You are not required to hold the class if the conditions conducive to teaching are not met. Cancelling a class does not affect the pay of the instructor. You may consult your union.

Strike mandate

Whereas the chronic underfunding of higher education in Québec has direct consequences on the quality of education, services available to the student community, infrastructure, and learning conditions ;

Whereas students are already facing significant increases in the cost of living, particularly in housing, food, and transportation, making it increasingly difficult to pursue their studies ;

Whereas the elimination of the Perspective Québec Scholarship for new students and the stagnation of the Student Financial Assistance Program (AFE) reduce the financial support available to students while the cost of living continues to rise ;

Whereas student researchers contribute directly to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in Québec while often facing precarious financial conditions ;

Whereas the housing crisis and rising rent prices directly affect students’ ability to pursue their studies ;

Whereas the simultaneous mobilization of several student associations across Québec would significantly strengthen the student movement’s bargaining power, with 23,254 students having already voted in favour of a five-day strike and 8,390 in favour of a two-to-three-day strike ;

Whereas AÉÉTS has a mandate to defend the accessibility and quality of higher education in Québec ;

Be it resolved that :

AÉÉTS go on strike from Monday, November 9, to Friday, November 13 ;

This strike mandate include the cancellation of all classes and symbolic picketing ;

The cancellation of classes include the General Assembly’s refusal to allow academic material not taught during the strike to be included in subsequent exams;

Symbolic picketing be determined by the level of student participation on each strike day;

This strike mandate take effect only if more than 40,000 students across Québec are also on strike on the same days;

A reconvening General Assembly be held on Thursday, November 12, to consider extending the strike to Saturday, November 14 ;

AÉÉTS support the C.R.U.E.S. call to action.

AÉÉTS demand the following :

  • An increase in Student Financial Assistance (AFE), particularly to compensate for the elimination of the Perspective Québec Scholarship, through retroactive adjustments dating back to 1990 and a reassessment of eligibility criteria;

  • An investment of more than 4% in higher education to offset austerity-related cuts resulting from funding freezes;

  • Significant investment in student housing;

  • Increased funding for research scholarships;

  • Direct investment in academic activities through improved student services, the hiring of teaching staff, and increased resources to update courses and research programs.
